Tech Demo - DXR Spotlight
DXR Spotlight Tech Demo
This demo showcases the use of Microsoft® DirectX® 12 and DXR technologies. We designed and created a scene that would utilize the cutting edge features of real-time ray-traced Reflections, Shadows, and Global Illumination.
CHALLENGES & GOALS
The challenge for our team was to think creatively about how to incorporate an enjoyable experience in a scene that needed to be visually breathtaking.
WHY THE MALDIVES?
First, in order to test the limits of real-time ray tracing, we were going to need a scene that would showcase reflections, translucency, and areas with stark lighting differences. A room at an ultra-luxurious resort in the Maldives provided us with the landscape to create a visually stunning demo and allowed a backdrop for us to create assets that would dramatically showcase real-time ray tracing.
This is where we had the most fun! We could have settled with having toggle switches to enable the ray tracing features, but that’s not us! Instead, we created a mini-game where you control a drone and have to find the “lost” ray tracing lenses to enable the features you want to see. Not only can you toggle the ray tracing features, but you can fly around the room, and turn on/off the fan, lights, and TV.
WHAT DID WE BUILD?
Even with the limited time and resources, almost everything in the scene was created especially for the demo.
The building was constructed in Revit and Datasmithed directly into Unreal Engine. Other assets including, but not limited to, the chandeliers, fan, tub, bathroom bench, bed, end tables, and drone were created in 3DS Max. The materials were created using Substance Designer.
The only pre-existing assets are the chairs, lamps, books, fruit/coffee plate, drink cart, apples, plants, bathroom bottles, soaps, towels, clothes, and baskets.
HOW DOES REAL-TIME RAY TRACING HELP US?
As an architectural visualization studio, RT Ray Tracing is going to be instrumental in streamlining our workflow and will substantially increase the visual fidelity of our work.
We cut our production light baking time from 24 hours to 2 hours by reducing our lightmap settings. The Reflections and Translucency are 1000x better and make our assets look real. The Shadows, AO and GI settings really help us get a photorealistic view as we’re staging the scene.
